As part of Steve Dawson’s September residency at the Hideout, Dolly Varden will play “The Panic Bell,” their acclaimed 2007 album, in its entirety, along with new songs they’ve been working on for their next album.
“Songwriter Steve Dawson has an unerring capacity for finding the caveat in joy and desolation, in light and darkness. His voice thins and strains with compelling force; partner Diane Christiansen’s is here a fragile ache, there a soothing croon of reassurance; and when they sing together, the two create an entirely new whole. “I am very excited to announce the release of “Take It To The Bridge: Unlocking The Great Songs Inside You.” I’ve been working on it with Mark Caro for many years as an extension of my songwriting classes at The Old Town School of Folk Music. The book aims to encourage and inspire anyone who’s ever thought about writing a song through practical, approachable assignments that explore all elements of songwriting: form, lyrics, chords, melody and rhythm. The exercises were culled from 10 years of weekly assignments. Mark and I chose the ones that have had the best results over the years and seem to help people open up and write to their best potential. Dolly Varden returns to FitzGerald’s August 19th
We’ll play a full set of new songs and favorites from past albums when we return to one of the best music rooms in the Chicagoland area. Phil Angotti and his band play the second set and we’ll do a handful of songs together, too. A great, full evening of music beginning at 8:30. Advance tickets on sale now

We are very happy to announce that Dolly Varden will be performing at the Old Town School of Folk Music’s Square Roots Festival on July 8th at 9pm. We hope to see you there!
AND Steve and Diane will be joined by Robbie Fulks on Friday, 29th, at the Chicago Shambhala Meditation Center for a fundraiser and silent auction. Songs from the Jesus Christ Trio, from Robbie’s albums, Dolly Varden albums, and choice favorite covers. General Admission tickets are only $20 and space is limited!
